Under 10’s Mini Rugby

Welcome all to U10 rugby and the 2009/10 season. Firstly I would like to thank all, players, coaches, admin, parents and supporters for the great support last year. A difficult season with pitch development, early starts and away fixtures as well as moving to the squad system instead of A and B teams. These problems aside we all agree this was a very positive year for this squad’s rugby. The superb team spirit shown by this group of boys as well as taking to contact rugby like they had never worn tags produced many great results culminating in a fantastic showing on the Isle of Wight for both the equal squad teams selected.

This season the rugby takes a step up with contested scrums and line outs so the hard work on the training pitch must continue. We plan to maintain the game based training reinforcing this with relevant drills and separate technique sessions. Playing and enjoying rugby apart the aim of this season will be to develop the squad. We will do this by boosting the skills of all players in all aspects of rugby to set the foundations for the 15 man game (where a strong squad is essential). We aim to set up a series of tests to asses each player and identify where they need improvement whatever their current skill level and so will be able to quantify a players improvement over the season.

Team selection will also aim to develop the squad with selection for fixtures this season being based on attendance, attitude and number of games played. This squad rotation system will give all players within the U10’s a chance to play and improve to our current high level of performance. At triangular fixtures all players will attend and mixed teams will be selected as on the Isle of Wight last yr. If a player is not selected for a fixture we would assume the player is rested so as to be as fit as possible to perform to the best of their ability when next selected, resting players are welcome to come along as supporters. All players selected for a fixture will play in every game via rolling subs if possible.
